It seems safe to assume that every German native has encountered the English word “bonds” at one point or another in connection with what are known as Eurobonds. My vague assumption that the term referred to some kind of bank loan proved not too far off the mark, as my subsequent research showed. But besides the many, many classifications banking specialists have assigned bonds, I found another plausible meaning of the word: chains, in the sense of “being in bonds”, or “bound”.
The word thus suddenly formed an unexpected yet wonderful homonym, making it virtually predestined as an image for a medal, despite my initial scepticism.
